After some archeological culture and a dose of reality in Phonsavan, we headed to Vang Vieng. This is not the place to go for any meaningful cultural interaction. It's more like a mini backpackers' spring break.
The town itself is very strange. I've never seen anything like it. They were tons of identical restaurant/bars where you sit on pillows and watch either Friends or Family Guy. When we first arrived it was raining, so everyone was inside of the restaurants. It was like an episode of the Twilight Zone. These places were full of glassy-eyed travelers sipping on mixed drinks taking in the n-teenth episode of Friends.
On our first full day there I went rock climbing while Janet relaxed. There are spectacular karst formations in the region and the rock climbing was amazing.
The next day we did what Vang Vieng is famous for, why everyone goes there: tubing. Basically, you rent an inner tube and float down a river going from bar to bar drinking beers and free whiskey shots. All of these bars have slides, zip lines, and rope swings up to 40 feet in the air where you can jump into the river. Clearly this would not be allowed in any developed country, and its obvious why. A few people drown every year. (Don't worry parents, we are responsible). But it was so much fun! I think the picture below pretty much sums it up...
